Blog 4- The ship

I was bewildered when I first saw it. It was so unbelievable that at first I though it was only a mirage, but when it did not go away I was delighted. Then I told Piggy and Simon, but they did not see it at first, which frustrated me and made me doubt whether it was really there or not. When I looked up at the signal fire I was devastated. It was not burning. Piggy asked if the signal fire was burning, but I had no time to answer. I was in a full sprint down the beach and when I reached the scar I didn't even look around to find the trail. I simply ran through everything in my way and when I finally emerged, my legs were covered in blood. I stood at the top watching the boat disappear in disbelief. The only thing I asked of them was to keep that fire going and now it was out, and all hope was lost for the time being. Then I saw something emerge from the jungle on the other side of the hill. When I focused in on what it was, I saw that it was the hunters. Their faces were all painted with opalescent white clay, along with some red and a line of black. When the entire group had come out, Sam and Eric followed with a pig on a spit. This was absolutely preposterous; they left the fire just so that they could go kill a pig. Right then Piggy arrived and at the sight of the fire began to whimper. I told him to be quiet, but I felt like I could break down in tears at any second out of pure frustration. When the group arrived I confronted Jack and could immediately see the malevolence in his eyes. He talked and talked about how amazing it was to kill the pig. And not until he finished could I get a word in edgewise.
"There was a boat," I said.
"What," he replied, finally interested in what was going on.
"You were supposed to keep the signal fire going."
"We wanted meat."
What he said was so irrelevant I almost punched him.
"If we had been rescued and gone home we could have feasted on any kind of meat we pleased."
Now Piggy chimed in, "If the lot of you had taken some responsibility in the first place this would never have happened. For god's sake it's the only thing important Ralph asked you to...." His rant was stopped by a hard smack to the face from Jack and he let out a shrill scream. His glasses flew off and one of the lenses shattered against a rock. Piggy was devastated. "Jack," I said. "I told you to keep the fire going and you didn't, I'm the leader here and I said to keep that fire going and you didn't."
"Fine, I apologize about the fire," he said with a hint of implication that it was not sincere, but not totally incredulous. He knew that he had to apologize to keep the people he had on his side loyal to him, for he needed some power on this island and could not give it up completely even though I had fairly won the election. At that moment I gave up and grabbed Piggy's specs to relight the fire. In about ten minutes there were pieces of meat gyrating on sticks. After Jack had handed Simon and I a piece of meat, Piggy asked if he could have one as well.
"No," was the answer from Jack.
"Please," he said.
"No, you didn't help hunt."
"Neither did Simon or Ralph and they still got some."
At that moment Simon slid a piece of meat to Piggy out of pure pity. Piggy thanked him and then began to devour it.
Jack slammed another piece down in front of Simon.
"Eat!" He yelled, "I hunted this for us and you will eat it!"
I had had enough. I got up and said that I was going to call a meeting right now and they should all come. Then I walked down the hill to the meeting place and didn't say another word. Not even a thank you for the meat.
I was furious with what Jack had done and was now doing. He had played a dirty trick on those boys tonight and I was not happy with it. It was time to call a meeting to make sure everyone was still loyal.

Dimitri,

Excellent job! Your journal entry is full of details and provides further insight into the events of chapter 4.

REVISION ASSIGNMENT: Write 5-10 more sentences speculating about Jack's motives. Why is he doing this?

Jack is trying to get people on his side because he is jealous of Ralph being leader. He is very power hungry and does not like to be told that he is wrong about anything. When Ralph confronted him about the fire going out he worked his way around it so that he wouldn't look like a jerk.
